The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated carcinomas tend to share distinct phenotypic characteristics, an undifferentiated phenotype and highly invasive nature, all with little to no viral gene expression. The link between the unique epigenetic profile and phenotypes in EBV-associated carcinomas has not been fully defined.  Dr. Birdwell uses a transient infection model to study the functional consequences of epigenetic changes caused by EBV in epithelial cells.
