Research: To survive, intracellular bacterial pathogens must establish and maintain a niche that supports replication and shields them from host defenses. In our laboratory, we investigate the pathogenesis mechanisms of the human intracellular bacterial pathogen Legionella pneumophila. My project is focused on characterization of the molecular mechanisms that control of the biogenesis of the Legionella intracellular niche. Using innovative genetic approaches, I will identify novel host and bacterial factors that maintain the integrity of the Legionella intracellular niche and determine how they promote Legionella intracellular survival.
